Independent Ceylon

In the aftermath of the Second World War, in 1948 a tiny non-profitable business was shed from a huge multinational corporation in order to avoid its imminent bankruptcy due to war related expenses. Because small business had become a burden to the big business.
Independence Day in Ceylon 1948
When somebody is not performing well, and cannot be improved anymore the employer usually decides to SACK him. During the final interview the employer usually says "WE'D LIKE TO LET YOU GO!” The employee gets it like this "I'M FREE, I'M NOT BOUND ANY MORE!” It can take a very long time (depending on the employee's ability to comprehend) for him to understand the real meaning.
The real meaning is "I sack you, you are useless, you can do whatever you want!", but by saying it more "Politically Correct" way the employer avoids a really big punch on his nose.
"Yes, Ceylon became another INDEPENDENT nation on 4th of Feb 1948"
